Good Coffee

by jcjancsik on August 31, 2009

Seriously - the best way to make a cup of coffee. I receive Cook’s Illustrated Magazine and it’s one of the few Magazine’s that I get that Ali thoroughly enjoys, often times reading it cover to cover. The technical aspect of it appeals to him. The articles are very analytical and walk through a thorough explanation of the “whys” when cooking. For example the best way to make pancakes, or bake cookies, roast, etc. I like that during their product reviews, one is often surprised to read that its’ not the high end cooking items that offer the best quality. As often its the off brand, based on quality for cooking etc.

So where was I? Oh yeah - the best pot of coffee. Here we go. So in the latest Cook’s magazine there was an article that covered how to make the best pot of coffee and Ali was intrigued enough to put their study to the test - and I’d have to say it WAS truly a great cup of coffee.

To start with, Cooks reports that to get the best cup of coffee you need to use a French Press and freshly ground beans. Which meant obtaining a French Press and coffee grinder. Consequently, we’d recently read a report on the best coffee and while Duncan Doughnuts (which I buy in bulk from Costco) was up there on the top of the list, the best rated was 8 o’clock which they sell all over out here - and its on the cost savvy side of things I might add.

Armed with his French Press, Coffee Grinder and 8 O’clock coffee beans, Mr. Atash went to work with surgeon like percision - right down to measuring the temperature of the boiling water. Hands down a success - this is how you get a great cup of coffee.

Pumpkin's & Bats

Pumpkin

These are some munchkin pumpkins set inside a bowl with paper bats (on wire) that I connected to the bottom of the pumpkins to create an inpromptu festive center piece. The whole project took 15 minutes and was under $5 bucks.

Not too shabby.

Carmel Apples -

by jcjancsik on August 12, 2009

My Seasonal Drug of Choice...

My Seasonal Drug of Choice...

I looooooooove caramel apples….with peanuts of course. My sister and I use to make a drive into the city for these when I lived in California. When she was here a few years ago we were walking through Bryant Park in the city and they had holiday vendors - one of which had caramel apples. Yummy. I’ve actually never made caramel apples?!? Probably because it would be terribly dangerous to have them around the house.
