Whats so Big about Halloween???

by hjancsik on October 30, 2008

Lets start with who celebrates this holiday… To no surprise not everyone does the following are countries that do celebrate in some way, shape or form:

Australia, Bahamas, Canada, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, United Kindom and United Sates.  Latin America celebrates Noche de las Brujas otherwise known as Night of the  Wiches).

Okay so what so special about this day??  What you might not know is it is the Irish that brought this holiday to us.  The simple part of this holiday is to trick-or-treat, tell ghost stories, go ghost hunting, carve jack-o-lanterns (once turnips) watching scary movies.  This holiday was originally started by the Celtics.  It was to celebrate the end of the Harvest.  (This might be why there are many Harvest Festivals this time of year)  Of course this was the time where the ancient pagans took stock of supplies and prepared livestock for the winter ahead.

Halloween is also known as the All Hallows Eve the day before All Saints Day.  Another interesting fact, The Jack-O-Lantern in Europe (usually a turnip or rutabaga) was used to frighten off any superstitions.

Halloween to most cultures is the day where spirits come from the “underworld” and spook and come and see what has become of others they once new and lived.  Most countries have a similar belief in this holiday.  But that shouldn’t be surprised because this holiday did come from the Celtics.

What we all need to remember is Halloween is what we make it.  It doesn’t have to be evil, it can be about spending time with family and yes going door to door and asking for candy by saying “Trick or Treat”.  Its what we make it.  I say go make this holiday a day that is a special time for you and your family.  Encourge tradition mostly with this.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN FROM THE WICKED BROOMSTICK!!!
